Wisconsin – Native Culture

Experience Native American Heritage and Culture – Native Culture

Wisconsin is home to 11 federally recognized Tribal Nations with nationally recognized tribal museums and cultural centers, including the Oneida Nation Museum, Menominee Indian Tribe Cultural Museum, the George W. Brown Jr. Ojibwe Museum & Cultural Center at Lac du Flambeau and the Forest County Potawatomi Cultural Center to name a few. Visitors are encouraged to learn more about each tribe’s distinct culture that is integral to the nation’s history.

Wisconsin is also home to around 4,000 ancient Native American effigy or burial mounds marked throughout the state, the highest concentration in the world. Many can be found in state and county parks with informational signs that tell their stories. As you and your group hike through scenic forests and hills, you can get a glimpse into the meaningful history that lies underneath the natural beauty.

Travelers are invited to attend powwows, including the Ho-Chunk’s lively celebrations every Memorial Day and Labor Day and the Ojibwe’s annual Honor the Earth Homecoming Celebration and Powwow. Experience Wisconsin’s diverse and beautiful Native culture firsthand by watching traditional dances, listening to the songs and learning the stories that have been handed down through the millennia. These experiences are sure to stay with you long after you leave Wisconsin.
